| Floodproof construction |
Flood-resilient buildings
Owing to climate change and subsidence urban areas will increasingly have to deal with flooding. Basically, water is threatening us from all sides; from the sea, from the rivers, by precipitation and as seepage water from the ground. The other side of the coin is that we will have drier periods, too, more frequently. Water as a guiding principle for the designed area and the development of new construction concepts as an answer to the imponderables in relation to the climate. Floodproof construction means taking into consideration these imponderables and adapting to changing circumstances, in order to insure that the quality of life remains at a high level.
Floodproof construction methods
Expertise development in relation to floodproof construction has already led to a whole range of concepts and constructive and non-constructive solutions. Noticable examples of building methods are: floating construction, amphibious construction, construction on piles, alavated construction, dry- and wetproof construction. Practical examples are floating- and amphibious houses, platformhouses, terphouses, artificial islands and floating glasshouses.
Continuous development
Dura Vermeer has built up an extensive network at home and abroad in recent years and gained expertise and experience in the field of floodproof construction. It is an issue which is not only relevant to the Netherlands, but has also been taken up by other countries. With that, some remarkable examples of practical applications have been realised, from which learning points are being shared. These experiences are subsequently used in the further expertise- and concept development and its translation into daily construction practice. This means that expertise is now available with regard to the modelling of damage as a result of flooding, construction concepts have been elaborated and based on a sound financial footing, situation-specific variables and solutions can be offered and cost-benefit analyses can be made.
