     Demonstration model floating greenhouse

First- built floating greenhouse in the world

Floating greenhouses offer the opportunity to combine two functions on the same square metre: greenhouse horticulture and water storage. There is an increasing demand for this multiple use of space, because space in the Netherlands is restricted, while the demand for living-, working- and recreational locations is increasing. In the years to come many tens of thousands of hectares will be used for water storage, at the cost of the available space. To give these water storage areas an extra economic function it may be easier to create space for water storage.

The concept of floating greenhouses has been developed from the idea that it contributes to the solution of spatial limitations that arise from the redevelopment of greenhouses and will create space/room for water storage.
The process from idea to the large-scale construction of floating greenhouses comprises a number of phases:
    1.   Feasibility research floating greenhouses
    2.   Show model floating greenhouse
    3.   Pilot project on a commercial scale
    4.   Large-scale realisation

On Wednesday 7 September 2005 the Demo Floating Greenhouse was officially opened by the Dutch Minister of Agriculture, Mr Veerman. It is a state-of-the-art greenhouse, put up in white hardened glass and built on a floating platform of FlexBase (www.flexbase.eu). The show model has been designed as a presentation and exposition space and serves as a platform for innovations in greenhouse horticulture and building with water.

The show model is an initiative of six companies that work together in development and innovation. Besides that, there are a number of sponsors that have supported the show model financially or in kind. In May 2008 Flower Auction FloraHolland took over the show model from the building consortium. Thus, the Demo Flaoting Greenhouse will remain and serve as an Example of Dutch Delta Technology.
