     House-building based on composites

Floodproof building

As an active member of the consortium Dura Vermeer Business Development participates in an knowledge development project called 'House-building based in composites'.

Though the consequences of climate change are uncertain and hard to predict, specialists in the field of climate change take into consideration ‘extreme events’, such as extreme rainfall, more flooding, etc. Traditional building materials, in terms of properties such as maintenance and sustainability, offer no optimal answer to building in wet areas, especially linked to construction and water. Therefore, the project consortium examines the application of composites as an alternative to traditional building materials in the construction of housing.

What are synthetic composites?
Composites of synthetic fibre (in short: 'composites') are related to a group of new materials, developed in the aeronautics and space industry. The use of fibres is the base, from which the required shape is realized. These are combined with synthetic resin, forming a sustainable and strong material. The synthetic fibre can be used solidly or as a coating on other materials.

Advantages
With composites it is possible to build light and strong constructions. The properties of this material are: freedom of design, low density, durability, low maintenance costs, chemical proof, etc.

Flood- and hurricaneproof construction
Dura Vermeer, in cooperation with other partners, wants to prove with this research project that composites as building material can be competitive, especially with flood proof construction, and Dura Vermeer is convinced that with flood proof construction there is a powerful drive for innovation to produce materials efficiently, to maximise processing on the building site and to control maintenance costs.

Applicability
The flood proof housing concept combined with composites is related to the numerous cases possible in the Dutch Province of South-Holland, but, in fact, there are possibilities in all the world's mostly densely-populated deltas. In other words, knowledge development in the case of South-Holland offers in the long term an important opportunity to export expertise. Moreover, not only is this concept flood proof, but also suitable for hurricane proof construction at home and abroad. By designing compartments along a river or polder outlet area, the watercourse is discharged in a regulated way. By controlling the compartments, housing can be realised and for that composite housing with its specific characteristics is eminently suitable.

The consortium
The consortium consists of Dura Vermeer, Ferendi, Solico, ONL, Poly Products, NEDCAM and Brands Structural Products BV. The Province of South-Holland partly subsidizes the research costs. See also the website www.composieten.nu.
