| UFM - Urban Flood Management |
Designing sustainable planning- and construction methods
Urban Flood Management (UFM) is an international knowledge development programme in which is examined whether the possible consequences of high water and flooding can be incorporated as an integral factor in urban planning. This expertise can lead to suitable measures for prevention and mitigation, integral approaches to high water in urban planning and the sharing of experiences and 'best practices' internationally.
Floodproof construction
UFM Dordrecht is examining the actual case study for the 'Stadswerven', a 30 ha area in the city of Dordrecht. For this area, an urban design already exists, which has been approved by the Council. In this plan, on the advice of Rijkswaterstaat, the projected district is being raised to a height of four metres as a protection against flooding. UFM Dordrecht is developing an alternative project with room for water. This has consequences for building and infrastructure. To prevent or restrict damage by flooding, alternative methods of construction come into view: flood proof construction. This results in different design methods and the application of new constructions and installations which are waterproof. The UFM-project should prove that damage and victims, as a consequence of possible flooding, can be lowered significantly by a combination of modifying traditional constructions (retrofitting) , different urban planning and raising awareness/communication.
International
UFM Dordrecht is part of an international cooperation project of the cities of Dordrecht, London and Hamburg and is co-financed by the Dutch 'Living with Water' -programme.
Workpackages
The UFM-project consists of 7 workpackages:
• implementation of feasibility examination;
• analysis flood risk and vulnerability;
• design flood resilient planning- and construction methods;
• design of a urban plan for the area outside the dyke ring
• advice communication- and emergency plans;
• advice Policy & Governance and dissemination of project results.
Dura Vermeer is involved in the implementation of the tasks from the workpackage 'Design flood resilient planning- and construction methods' . Flood-damage estimation on the basis of different types of houses and cooperation with other study groups/workshops is essential for this. Dura Vermeer advises on floodproof construction on the basis of expertise and experience.
Participants
In the consortium of the project the following parties take part:
Dordrecht City Council, Waterschap Hollandse Delta, Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), the Province of South-Holland, Dura Vermeer, WL Delft Hydraulics, Progrez and UNESCO-IHE.
This project is supported by the 'Living with Water'-programme (NL) and by RIMAX-BMBF (DE), and scientifically directed and controlled by COST-C22.
